Biotin for Hair, Skin & Aging – What the Science Says

Not all vitamins are created equal. As a water-soluble member of the B-vitamin complex, Biotin is the quiet architect of skin and hair’s structure, supporting keratin infrastructure in hair and nails, and aiding in the production of fatty acids that nourish skin on a cellular level.

When combined with the carefully calibrated blend of Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, Adaptogens and Omega 3s in Morning & Night, Biotin supports the body’s intrinsic processes to reveal healthier skin, stronger hair, and a more resilient aging process from within.

With Sabrina Carpenter-inspired curtain fringe and graduated bobs trending this summer, Biotin can be the hair hero you need to achieve your chosen warm weather hairstyle – complete with the thickness, glossiness and overall hair health worthy of a red carpet moment.

As a coenzyme for carboxylases, Biotin is involved in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and gluconeogenesis – all vital to cell growth and protein production. One of the key proteins it supports is keratin, a fibrous protein that forms the foundation of the hair shaft. Biotin supports keratin production indirectly by enabling the metabolism of amino acids, especially cysteine and methionine, which are essential for hair matrix cell proliferation – a healthy supply of these amino acids promotes stronger strands and reduces breakage.

And while Biotin has been anecdotally touted as a hair helper for decades, recent research confirms its efficacy in improving hair volume, texture and appearance. In a 2012 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, researchers investigated whether a Biotin supplement could improve hair health in women with self-perceived hair thinning. After a 90-day and 180-day period, the study found statistically significant improvements in hair volume, thickness, and scalp coverage.

Not only has Biotin been examined as an individual ingredient, but our Biotin-rich Morning & Night supplement has been studied as a complete supplement, with proven results to hair. Together with other hair-healthy ingredients like L-Cysteine and Glycine, Morning & Night is proven to improve hair health from within – in our independent clinical trial, 92% noticed glossier hair with the support of our award-winning supplement.

While Biotin has been widely associated with hair and nail strength, its role in skin health is equally significant, with Vogue exclaiming, “If you’re worried about the health of your super dry skin, Biotin may also help to fortify it… the vitamin is able to produce fatty acids that nourish the skin, and help oil glands function properly.”

As a coenzyme involved in fatty acid metabolism and cell signaling, Biotin maintains the integrity, hydration and resilience of the skin barrier. While Biotin can be found in foods like eggs, salmon, nuts and spinach, deficiencies can result in a cascade of skin-related symptoms – from dryness and rashes to more severe forms of dermatitis.

A 2020 study published in Nutrients emphasised that Biotin is essential in the maintenance of epidermal homeostasis, by modulating lipid metabolism pathways in keratinocytes, the predominant cells in the epidermis. The study highlighted both how 1) Biotin deficiency can lead to structural breakdown of the skin barrier, and 2) adequate Biotin intake can maintain healthy, resilient skin. Our Morning & Night supplement ensures that you’ll receive adequate Biotin for optimal skin health – blending 27 additional nutrients with this powerhouse ‘beauty vitamin’ to keep skin in peak condition.

Did you know that even identical twins can have different biological ages? In a recent episode of the What’s My Age Again podcast hosted by comedian Katherine Ryan, and friend of Lumity, Glycanage, each half of celebrity pair ‘Jedward’ was revealed to have a different biological age, due to lifestyle factors like sleep, stress and diet.

What we consume impacts how we age. Beyond its structural roles, recent in vitro and animal studies suggest that Biotin may exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in skin tissue, one of the leading causes of aging. A 2021 paper in International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that Biotin supplementation reduced oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokine production in skin cells under environmental stress.

And while Biotin is not an antioxidant per se, its role in cell proliferation, gene regulation and fatty acid synthesis makes it a silent player in the aging process. Skin aging is marked by a decline in cell turnover, collagen synthesis and lipid production – processes Biotin indirectly supports by promoting mitochondrial activity and DNA stability in dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

Though more research is needed, emerging studies indicate that maintaining optimal Biotin levels may help preserve epidermal regeneration and barrier integrity, two key factors in the fight against premature skin aging. As the UK’s original healthy aging supplement, Morning & Night addresses each of the nine causes of aging, slowing the biological aging process internally and externally – with results that you and everyone around you will notice.

Not Your Average Biotin Supplement

Morning & Night is more than your average Biotin supplement. Partnering Biotin with 27 additional biologist-selected Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids and Omega 3s, Morning & Night supports whole body health on a cellular level – noticeably improving skin, hair, aging, sleep, energy, immunity, mood and more.
